BEEF
OVEN BRAISED SHORT RIBS
(This is also very good with a beef roast)
5 lb. Short ribs
3 Tbs. Shortening
1 tbs. Instant minced onion
1/8 tsp. Garlic powder
1 Tbs. Bon' Appetite' (if you can't find it, mix some
celery salt with MSG)
1 tsp. Herb seasoning
1/4 tsp. Ground thyme
1 bay leaf
1/2 tsp. Black pepper
1 tsp. Beef flavor base
1 C. Hot water
6 med. Potatoes
6 med. Carrots, peeled
1.  Brown short ribs on all sides in hot shortening.
2.  Add seasonings and beef flavor base dissolved in the hot water.
3.  Cover.  Bake at 350 degrees for 2 1/2 hours.
4.  Drain off excess fat.  Add potatoes and carrots and bake 45 minutes to 1 hour
longer.
5.  Thicken liquid for gravy if desired.
For Beef Roast (5-6 pounds)
1.  Mix spices together.  Rub over roast.
2.  Brown in iron skillet with a little cooking oil.  Cover with beef
base dissolved in the hot water.  
2.  Cover pan and bake at 350 degrees for about 4 hours.
